If you are not actively deciding to do something, anything, you are likely living in fear, indecision, options overwhelm or with your head in the sand.
That, my friends, is no way to live.
Truth be told, that’s where most of us hang out. How many of you have actively avoided deciding on something, because you were afraid of the consequences? Right? Like, all of us.
Now of those, how many of you have taken the time to really understand that fear. Probably those of you with a life coach for a best friend. But certainly not everyone. What I see a ton in my professional and personal life, is people – wonderful, smart caring people (like you!) – who are carrying around an incredible amount of anxiety around a decision or a choice in their life.
“Should I change jobs?”
“Do I want to marry this guy?”
“When should I start my own business?”
“I need to move.”
These are common themes that affect your whole life. The problem is, so many people are afraid of what’s on the other side, that they are carrying around this desire for change, for new, for different, along side the fear and anxiety about what might happen. It’s so terrible to see – otherwise capable, intelligent, loving people reduced to wobbling messes of fear and doubts because they are refusing to make a decision.
Your fears are like acid, eroding your dreams.
See what I mean about not deciding ruining your life?
Here’s the deal: Everyone has choices to make. Everyone has dreams. The key here is to decide to make something happen, not stall out in negative fear talk. Do NOT let your fear kill your dreams. That would truly be a life ruined.
Ready to start deciding? Ready to start making some really awesome shit happen?
HERE ARE MY THREE STEP PROCESS TO GUIDE YOU FROM OPTIONS OVERWHELM TO CLARITY AND ACTION:
What do you really want?
Like really truly. Crank some Spice Girls and get honest. When you say “I need a new job” what are you really saying? That you need more money? Less hours? More interesting work? Be super specific and don’t fall into the trap of generalizations. “New job” is a great starting place, but it’s way too broad. What are you really wanting here?
What is at stake?
If you did nothing what would happen? If you did something what would happen? This is super helpful when you have a should-I-stay-or-should-I-go situation, because you really get to play out what might happen on both ends of the equation. Using ‘get a new job’ as our example, what are the stakes? If you stay, you might be staying at a company with low pay and shitty hours. (Or high pay and no dignity). If you go, you might have to start in a new industry or field (maybe) or take a pay cut (perhaps) but you also might reclaim your nights and weekends (and thus friends and time for romance) as well as no more insane-o boss.
What are three things I can do now to make this happen?
The trap that I see most people fall into is they try to go from 1-100 NOW. From old job to shiny new job in a week. That’s not always possible and more importantly, not realistic. Taking smaller, more powerful steps is a much better option. What’s the job market? Find 3 jobs to apply for. Identify companies you’d like to work for (or if it’s your own gig, scour Becca’s blog), and cross reference your LinkedIn account. Create a list of your must-haves and no-ways for a new job. Must have an office. No way, not less then X dollars.
You can accomplish all three steps in one afternoon, and have genuine movement on your dream.
So what are you waiting for?! Stop ruining your life and start deciding to be awesome. Then go out there, and BE awesome.
Report back in the comments, I’d love to hear what’s at stake for you if you DON’T make this decision.
